Fashion throughout the decades 50s-2000s
Fashion in the 1950’s-
The 1950s was most notably known as the post-World War two era and can be characterized as a uniform American society. The style during this time consisted of more casual wear and matching combinations of different garments.
Hair: For women in the ’50s, many wore their hair up in ponytails or had their hair short and curly. A very well-known haircut for men that stood out was the Pompadour and slicked-back hair.
Tops: Women mostly wore blouses with simple patterns while men rocked sports coats and bowling shirts.
Bottoms: Women wore long skirts and tapered slacks. Men wore mainly simple pants and trousers that complimented their jackets by either being textured or smooth design-wise.
Shoes: Popular shoes worn by women during this time consisted of wedges, saddle shoes, and short boots. Men mostly wore oxford shoes and loafers.
Fashion in the 1960s
The 60’ s are commonly known for the Civil Rights Movement, but it is also known as the “Swinging Sixties” that had a wide variety of fashion. Clothing came in a wide range of bright colors, different textures, and patterns.
Hair: In the early 60’s men had short hair and women had updos done with hairspray. By the end of the ’60s, most men and women had long, “natural” loose hair.
Tops: Turtle necks, button-down shirts, suits were often worn.
Bottoms: Miniskirts, pencil skirts, bell-bottoms, stirrup pants, Jax pants, and pantsuits.
Shoes: Low heels, flats, and boots.
Dresses: Shapeless, flowy dresses that reach down a little above the knees, known as “Baby Doll” clothes.
Hippie Fashion: Blue jeans, tie-dyes, swirls, flower headbands.
Fashion in the 1970s
The ’70s are best known for the popular “hippie” fashion. It is also known as the disco era.
Hair: An Afro, perming, long curled hair, long straight hair.
Tops: T-shirts, tie-dye, knit-vests, “peasant” shirts.
Bottoms: Denim jeans, bell-bottoms, jumpsuits, knee-length dresses.
Shoes: platform shoes, clogs
Fashion in the 1980s
The ’80s was full of wild and fun colors in many wardrobes.
Hair: Mullet, Jheri curls, tall mohawks, large and puffed up hairstyles.
Tops: Polo shirts, turtlenecks, shoulder pads, denim jackets, jumpsuits, baggy sweaters/jackets.
Bottoms: “Mom” jeans(denim and multi-colored), slacks(casual dress pants), leg warmers, stirrups, and baggy pants.
Shoes: Sneakers from popular brands and chunky boots
Fashion in the 1990s
The 90s were flooded with pop culture, influencing many different areas such as music, lifestyle, and fashion.
Hair: Women in the 90 wear their hair down and straight while men had the curtain bang hairstyle along with blonde highlights.
Tops: Dark-colored flannel shirts were worn by men most of the time along with graphic T-shirts and camisoles/ tank tops for women.
Bottoms: Washed out jeans and pleated skirts were most seen worn by women and for men baggy cargo pants and jeans were common.
Shoes: Popularized by grunge style and music Doc Martens were popularized in the ’90s for men and women. High-top sneakers were also a staple in the ’90s.
Fashion in the 2000s:
The early 2000s was the beginning of a new millennium and were an exciting time, especially for fashion.
Hair: The most commonly seen hairstyles for women were long straight/ wavy hair and for men, the mohawk and spikey hair in general became a trend.
Tops: Crop tops, tube tops, and zip-up sweaters were common in women's attire and for men, they wore leather jackets and T-shirts.
Bottoms: low rise jeans and mini skirts that came in a variety of colors and styles were worn by many big-name celebrities during this time which created a common style among women. Men mostly were seen wearing baggy jeans and cargo pants.
Shoes: Fur boots, high-rise boots, and heels were very prominent in women's fashion while men wore an array of sneakers ranging from Jordans, Vans, and Nike’s.
